Twitch Adds GIPHY GIFs to Chat for Tier 2 and Tier 3 Subscribers

Twitch chat is getting a new way to react in the moment: eligible Tier 2 and Tier 3 subscribers can send GIPHY GIFs directly into participating channels. The feature adds visual reactions to live conversations while leaving streamers with controls over whether GIFs are enabled and how channel settings shape their use.

How Twitch GIFs in Chat Work

In channels with the GIF Keyboard enabled, paid Tier 2 and Tier 3 subscribers can search or browse GIPHY and post a GIF as a chat message. To find the feature, open the chat’s Emote menu and select the GIFs tab. Twitch applies a 30-second cooldown between GIF messages from the same user.

GIF posting is a subscriber perk, not a general chat feature. Viewers must also be able to chat in the channel: timeouts, bans, and restrictive chat modes can prevent GIF messages from being sent.

Streamers Control Whether GIFs Are Available

Streamers can enable or disable the GIF Keyboard through subscription settings. Twitch has also described channel-level controls for managing GIF use, including options related to how often GIFs appear. Availability and settings can vary by channel, so subscribers may not see the GIF option everywhere.

When GIFs are enabled, streamers and moderators can delete individual GIF messages and take moderation action against the sender. GIF messages are subject to Twitch’s Community Guidelines and the channel’s existing moderation settings.

Content Ratings and Chat Safety

The GIF Keyboard uses GIPHY content ratings to filter the GIFs available in a channel. Twitch’s help information identifies PG as the default rating and G as a more restrictive option. These are GIPHY ratings, not ratings assigned by Twitch, and they do not replace Twitch’s Community Guidelines.

• AutoMod settings can filter GIF search terms that match a channel’s banned words or phrases.
• Emote-Only Mode and Shield Mode can restrict GIF messages.

Viewers who prefer a less animated chat can turn off GIF animations in their chat appearance settings. Twitch then displays a static preview instead of a moving GIF, allowing viewers to see the reaction without the animation.

GIPHY GIFs give higher-tier subscribers another way to express reactions without leaving Twitch chat. For streamers, the benefit is a more expressive conversation paired with channel controls and familiar moderation tools. The experience depends on the channel’s settings, the viewer’s subscription tier, and the moderation rules already in place.
